How Does CyberKnife Track Tumors?

In preparation for CyberKnife® treatment, our team works to help you understand all aspects of the technology and treatment process.

Some of our frequently asked questions are related to the accuracy of the CyberKnife. To ensure the CyberKnife stays on target as the robotic arm moves around you delivering radiation, the Austin CyberKnife clinical team includes a world-renown medical physicist.

The CyberKnife tracks tumors using an advanced imaging and tracking system. Tumors are monitored constantly throughout each treatment session. The tracking system updates the tumor’s location throughout the treatment procedure, even compensating for patient movements like breathing and ensuring the radiation beams are targeting the tumor during treatment.

With this advantage, our physicians are able to treat complex and difficult-to-reach tumors. By precisely targeting and delivering high-dose radiation from multiple angles, CyberKnife also significantly reduces treatment time for the patient and minimizes radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
