Tests to Determine a Cancer Diagnosis

If cancer is suspected, your physician may recommend conducting one or more tests to confirm a diagnosis and verify the type and stage of cancer. Note that there are a variety of diagnostic tests for cancer and the recommended test(s) vary with each patient. Below are a few tests that your doctor may suggest for you or a loved one.

X-rays: X-rays are among the most common tests and can help cancer care specialists identify abnormal spots in the body.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): A magnetic resonance imaging test produces a computer-generated picture of the inside of the body. This method can locate a tumor and identify a stage of cancer.

CT scan: A CT or CAT scan produces a 3D image of the body to detect and identify a stage of cancer. This type of test is a lung cancer screening method recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for those who meet specific guidelines.

Biopsy: A biopsy occurs when a sample of tissue is taken from an area that has been identified as having abnormal tissue. Biopsies are generally recommended following imaging tests and are considered one of the most definitive cancer diagnosis tests.

When a patient is referred to Austin CyberKnife, our physician team will review the results of your scan and/or biopsy to determine CyberKnife® candidacy and present overall treatment plan options.
